Swiss SnippetsWhat is a Mayen?

Did you know that a mayen (\ma.jɛ̃\) is a small wooden hut made of timber (usually larch) or stone in the Swiss mountains? They are found in the lower alpine pastures where the people would stay when they were moving the cattle up to the summer pastures. One of our teachers, Claudine, has constructed a miniature scene in her front garden that demonstrates how the mayen were used.

Nowadays, mayen are often transformed into modern homes combining tradition with the newest technology to create something original and spectacular. One of our favourite conversions has to be the one in Vals. Watch it on Extraordinary Homes (starting at 15.11) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZDd3QqSBz0

Every month we’ll be posting a fact about the Valais and Switzerland; particularly useful for those applying for their Swiss passport. Follow us and learn more.
